Check out the new book by Brock Yates. He did the actual events back in the old days, and he wrote the original screenplay that was supposed to have that Bullit! guy in it. Instead the studios hired Burt Reynolds and butchered the script.
The book is called Cannonball! oddly enough. Yates discussed it in a recent magazine. (Car and Driver? Road and TRack? one of those two.)
